Refit

Open her up, then quote

A refit quote written from photographs is a made-up number. First we take off whatever it takes to see.

The point

A refit never ends where it looked like it would

Water travels in timber. The soft patch you can see on deck almost always starts two metres forward of it.

So the initial survey runs three days and is charged separately: we sound, open the suspect areas, and put what we found in writing, with photographs.

From that comes a quote in three parts: what has to be done, what is worth doing now because the staging is already up, and what can wait for next season.

What gets redone

Four chapters, usually in this order

01

Below the waterline

Full strip, moisture survey, laminate repair and new antifouling.

2 – 5 weeks

02

Deck

New teak, caulking, and repair of the structure underneath where needed.

3 – 6 weeks

03

Systems

Electrical, hydraulic, bilge, generator. Anything over fifteen years old gets replaced.

2 – 4 weeks

04

Interiors

Joinery, leather, paint. Stripped out, rebuilt in the joinery, refitted.

3 – 8 weeks

Undercover

A refit in the open is half a refit

The storage shed with hulls ashore.
A hand plane on a curved piece of timber.

Paints and resins have a temperature and humidity window. Outside, in winter, that window lasts three hours a day and the job stretches by weeks.

  • Heated shed, forty berths ashore
  • Spray booth with extraction
  • Fixed staging on every undercover berth

Questions

About refit

What does the survey cost?

It is charged by the day and comes off the refit in full if the work comes to us.

The written report with photographs is yours either way, even if you go elsewhere.

Do you work on other yards’ boats?

Yes, and it is most of the refit work. Timber hulls of any origin, and composite up to twenty-eight metres.

Can we stay aboard during the work?

No: there are solvents and dust in the shed. But you can visit at any time, with us.

Will you do just the hull below the waterline?

Yes. It is the most requested job and the easiest to quote, because what is under there shows itself straight away.

Survey

Bring her before the winter

The shed fills up in September. Book the survey by August and you choose your slot.
